AKB48 constantly changes lineup members. The group is divided into various teams (A, K, B, 4, 8), and new members are recruited via auditions. Many members “graduate” (leave the group) for various reasons, such as being dedicated to their education, pursuing in the entertainment industry, or personal reasons when they feel ready to move on. It is a part of the group’s members’ system of replacing older members with trainees. Members perform in the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara almost everyday.

The Controversy

AKB48

The Dating Ban Rule member of AKB48 must be expected to stay single. Some members faced harsh consequences for breaking this rule, this rule was so strict that must be obeyed.

In 2013 Minami Minegishi faced consequences and shaved her head and uploaded an tearful apology video online after involving a dating scandal. She was caught and caught and photographed by fans spending the night and leaving her boyfriend’s apartment, a dancer in a boy band Exile named Alan Shirahama.

In the video, she expressed her desire to stay with AKB48 and intended to reflect her behavior. The video received mixed reactions, with certain fans supporting her, while other criticized the idol industry’s strict rules.

Although she was been forgiven and welcomed back as a core member of the Japanese girl group. She surprised the fans by announcing “she graduating” from the group. Minegishi graduated from AKB48 in 2021 (she has now decided to quit). At 27 years old, she is the last first-generation member to depart from AKB48.

A few have pointed out, seasonality is relevant its too hard to stay on top forever, specially for a high rotation group. Constantly reinventing themselves and making sure new members gain recognition is essential. Looking back it seems management attempted to expend all their resources rather than developing a good strategy to maintain the group relevance throughout the years. The top members were gone it was hard to maintain popularity, and it could be the downfall of their market.

Too many members – it might have been interesting to see 200 performance on stage (include sister group) but far from being sustainable. With so many girls, its simply impossible for everyone to have a chance to stand out, which i believed one of the significantly to early graduations, along side 2nd and 3rd. Consistently highlight Nogizaka’s strategy, still in the fourth generation : fewer members + more opportunity for everyone to shine promotes a healthier environments and enhances member retention.

Bad management decisions and poor strategies – One of the most common missteps in management is team shuffles and sending great AKB members to fade into obscurity in sister groups. Why add more stress and problems to them in an already tough environment? Additionally, failing to acknowledge the exceptional, dedicated, and skilled members including newer ones as well, so they’d successfully succeed the older ones when they graduated. Such a wasted talent.

Senbatsu elections – It was a fundamental part of the group and likely contributed to its early popularity (as well as boosting sales of CDs and merchandise) but it greatly harmed the mental health of the members since their hard work rarely reflected their rankings or fame and also inspired tension between them. It can lead to member rivalries and intense competition.

Lack of Variety Shows – How do you get to know the new members, including their unique traits and personalities? If the other variety shows are basically gone by now, it’s common to read nowadays that all members seem alike and that no one really knows them.
